Around Charleston - March 2024

by Bill Olson

Exciting news for Charleston and its economy – things are looking up! Starting May 3, Breeze Airways is bringing back its nonstop flights from Charleston to LA just in time for the summer, and they're not stopping there. They've also introduced flights to Newburgh, NY. Meanwhile, Charleston International Airport is breaking records, with over 6 million travelers in 2023. Talk about a busy year!

In other news, Thai Airways is placing a huge order for 49 Boeing Dreamliners right out of North Charleston. And Google? They're setting up shop with a new data center campus in Dorchester County, expanding their presence from Berkeley County. Plus, Moondog Animation Studio is making waves by growing their operations in Charleston County, promising 20 new jobs over the next five years with their $90,000 investment.

But wait, there's more! A major real estate deal is reshaping the former North Charleston Navy Base. In December, North Charleston made moves to sell over 37 acres to a trio of developers for a cool $10.7 million. Their vision? Transforming it into Battery Park, a mixed-use gem featuring over 1,400 homes, commercial spaces, green areas, and more, right by the Cooper River.

And in a heartwarming turn, Parker’s Kitchen has made the largest donation in the history of Roper St. Francis system – a whopping $5 million. This generous gift kicks off the Roper St. Francis Foundation Parker’s Community Impact Fund, aimed at supporting uninsured and underinsured folks in the area, plus boosting health care provider initiatives. This is a game-changer for local health care, promising positive impacts for generations.

Charleston's on a roll, folks! Let's keep the momentum going.
